The Compelling Why has partnered with The Fellowship Initiative (TFI) for the second year. TFI is a collaborative program between Big Thought and JPMorgan Chase that helps young men of color with college aspirations achieve their dreams. The program prepares young men to get into college, succeed through college, and succeed after college.
We are adding value to the TFI experience by providing Compelling Why Leadership Series programming, including eight interactive workshops focused on developing the attributes of integrity, commitment, emotional intelligence and collaboration. We are already a quarter of the way through the series, which will conclude this summer. The leadership skills are the employers highly value, giving our students a competitive edge.
One of the key leadership attributes we focus on in the Leadership Series is emotional intelligence. As Daniel Goleman, a renowned psychologist and author, highlighted in a Harvard Business Review, emotional intelligence is a crucial quality that sets great leaders apart from average ones. It is twice as important as IQ and technical ability in driving performance, and at the most senior levels of organizations, it accounts for 90% of the difference between the best and the rest. We believe that by understanding and developing emotional intelligence, our students can unlock their full potential.
It is vital to raise awareness of these attributes and accompanying terminology early in students’ lives so they can incorporate them into their behavior and interactions with their peers and teachers. It can also positively influence their connection with siblings and other family members.
