Lighting the Path Forward: How Six Years of Success Sessions Shaped Isaac Edwards’ Future

When the Compelling Why team surprised Uplift Luna Preparatory senior Isaac Edwards on campus, the moment marked the culmination of a six year journey shaped by purpose, exposure, mentorship, and resilience. Isaac first attended a Success Session as a sixth grader and is now preparing to attend Oklahoma State University, followed by Howard University School of Law, with plans to return to Dallas as an intellectual property attorney at the law firm, Jones Day.

His story reflects the transformative power of The Compelling Why, the strength of a supportive village, and the opportunities donors make possible.

Building Confidence Through Exposure

Isaac credits stepping onto college campuses during Success Sessions as a turning point – moments when he saw students with similar backgrounds thriving in spaces he once viewed as distant. Those experiences helped him understand that college is “an opportunity to build your network and business connections.” By intentionally hosting Success Sessions on university campuses, The Compelling Why fosters a sense of belonging for students who may be setting foot on a college campus for the first time, reinforcing that they, too, belong in these environments.

Purpose: The Power of Knowing Your Why

Isaac vividly remembers the session that introduced him to the idea of a “Compelling Why.” “They talked about your why as your purpose, your reason… it really stuck with me,” he said. Today, his purpose is clear: “My why today is to uplift kids… Getting a degree can go a long way, as well as developing connections and your network.”

Growth Through Community

Isaac returned to Success Sessions year after year, learning from business and community leaders. A lawyer on an eighth grade panel inspired him to pursue law: “His story made me want to shift to becoming a lawyer… I love fighting for what is right.” He also leaned on the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas, where he has been involved for more than 13 years.

Resilience and a Village of Support

In 2021, Isaac and his mother lost their home during the Dallas winter storm. “My house flooded, the pipes burst, and we had mold,” he recalled. Even through hardship, he stayed committed to school and leadership. “During this time, I started losing my why… but my community helped me refocus and tap back into my why, purpose, and leadership skills.”

Why Your Support Matters

Isaac’s journey reflects the impact of exposure, representation, mentorship, and a village that believes in students’ potential. As he shared, “You think what [The Compelling Why] offers is just a conference. But truthfully, it’s a mentorship that lasts for a whole day.” Because of supporters like you, Isaac knows his why – and is ready to lead!
